Man detained in Himachal after alleged rape linked to broken marriage promise
Himachal police have taken a resident of Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, into custody on accusations that he raped a woman who had placed her trust in his promise to marry her.
The accused, identified as Sameer, son of Dilshad, who lives in the Civil Lines area of Muzaffarnagar, was intercepted in Thural, Kangra district, just as he was preparing to leave the state.
Details of the complaint
According to the victim’s statement, Sameer pledged to marry her, then escorted her to Mandi where she alleges he assaulted her. After the purported attack, he allegedly absconded with her motorcycle, mobile phone, roughly ₹70,000 in cash and jewellery, abandoning her in Chandigarh. Subsequent attempts to reach him went unanswered.
Chronology of the investigation
The grievance was filed on 29 August as a Zero FIR at the Civil Lines Police Station in Muzaffarnagar and later transferred to the Sadar Police Station in Mandi for a thorough probe.
Following the filing, the complainant posted a video from Mandi questioning why the police had not yet located the suspect, noting that his phone remained active. Investigators examined the mobile‑tower logs, pinpointed the signal to Thural, and moved swiftly to apprehend him before he could cross the state border.
Official response
Mandi Superintendent of Police Vinod Kumar confirmed that the case is under active investigation and that Sameer will be presented before a court in accordance with legal procedures.
Authorities are now reviewing the full spectrum of allegations, including the alleged theft of money and jewellery, to determine additional charges based on the evidence collected.
